Highland Velvet is one of the best novels I’ve read. Very enjoyable. It is part of the Velvet Series by Jude Deveraux. Historical romance at its best. It is the second in the series. Each book tells the story of one of the wonderful, proud and gorgeous Montgomery brothers. There are four books total. In order, they are:
1) The Velvet Promise
2) Highland Velvet
3) Velvet Song
4) Velvet Angel
“Bronwyn MacArran was a proud Scot. Stephen Montgomery was one of the hated English.
He came to Scotland as a conqueror, saw her beauty and was vanquished. But still she would abhor him.
She owned a temper hot enough to forge the armors of battle or inflame a valiant soldier’s passion.
She became his reason to live, his reason to love. And still, she vowed to make him her enemy.
But while clan fought clan, while brother took up sword against brother, and the highlands ran with blood — their destiny was made…and this mighty warrior pledged himself to his woman’s pride, her honor and her name — and made of their love a torch to burn through the ages!”
Highland Velvet follows the second oldest Montgomery brother, Stephen, who is ordered by his king to take a Scottish bride. Bronwyn MacArran is the leader of her clan and she hates all English. The story focuses on Stephen’s attempts to fit in with the ways of the Highlanders, and trying his hardest to please a wife who hates him and who thinks, along with her clan, that his attempts to fit in with her people are ridiculous.
All books in the series were good, but as I said, Highland Velvet is my favorite among the four.
I remember the first to be a bit dark for my taste. The second was just magical. Velvet song was lighthearted. Velvet Angel, the last novel, was… emm, intense if I must say, but in the same time exciting, because all the brothers come together and play a part in it along with their wives. The ending was just wonderful.
Anyway, I recommend the series to all historical romance fans, or to anyone who enjoys a combination of adventure, battle and romance 🙂
